JESSE OWENS NORTH
Jesse Owens North
The Ohio State University || North Campus
For this redesign of the Jesse Owens North Recreation Center in the North Campus District at The Ohio State University, my design aims to create a destination for both students and the public. Using the site and existing axes and pedestrian traffic routes, a form was developed to create sight-lines, to keep hard edges and to create multiple outdoor spaces. A sloped roof facing the intersection of Lane Avenue and Neil Avenue draws the public in to the café and gift shop while the sloped roof and cantilevered upper floors facing campus draw in students from the residence halls to the main lobby of the main gym. Placed on the site of the existing Jesse Owens North facility, this redesigned rec center quadruples the square footage of the current facility and includes two basketball courts, a rock climbing wall, three racquetball courts, a rooftop tennis court and two badminton courts, a scuba diving swimming pool, classrooms, an indoor track, a café, gift shop and typical work out areas for cardio, weight machines, free weights and more.
