NEWMARK MEDICAL LIBRARY

Newmark Medical Library

Case Western Reserve University || University Circle

Tasked with designing a medical research library at Case Western Reserve University, my design started with a site visit and analysis. Taking into consideration the site, required program and the demographics of the potential users, a form was created that addressed the different approaches to the building and the necessity to have separate public and controlled spaces. With two separate circulation cores, one for the controlled library and one for the public museum, classrooms and lecture hall, the building’s open and seemingly fluent space is actually rather divided and striated in section due to the public and controlled areas. An inhabitable green roof over the main entrance hall features striated bench seating caused by undulating of the roof/ground plane. Similar striated and rotating strips act as the building skin, creating directed views in and out of the specific spaces. This skin system is pulled into the building in some places, altering floor planes and creating multi-story spaces.
